Romania Country Bread (Storybrooke Bakery) - Steveston Village,BC
Once, or twice, Upon a Time...those two geeks are still in the fictional town of Storybrooke, Maine. When Steveston Village transforms for filming, the Romania Country Bread shop becomes Storybrooke Country Bread. The exterior signage for the fictional bakery remains up.
As I approach, there is a beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog standing in front of the Romania Country Bread shop. The dog must be less than a year old. He is tall, awkward and gangly; with paws the size of tea-cup saucers. Ignoring his master's pleas of "Slow down! Chew slowly!" The tri-coloured pup greedily eats bread slices being tossed at him from within the bakery.
Whole Wheat Loaf ($10.00)
They only make one product: bread. That’s all.
You won’t see other items in this bread shop. Not even variations.
The bakers pull chubby, wholesome loaves from the wood fire oven. The bread is dense and chewy with a bit of tang. It’s very good with brie cheese.
One minute I'm being entertained by this Bernese, with his goofy canine smile, and the next minute I’m handing over a tenner for a loaf of bread. How did this purchase happen so fast?
Romania Country Bread seems to have a dedicated local following too. The lady behind me needed two loaves, and the gentleman behind her picked up three. Are you doing the math? That’s $60 worth of bread sold in approximately 60 seconds.
I can't help but think of Hanzel and Gretel when admiring the brick oven. Grim, I know.
Romania Country Bread produces a quality loaf, but DL enjoys it much more than I do. I like whole wheat, but I don’t love whole wheat. So, there’s that.
What I do love is the devotion Romania Country Bread puts forth in making their one product, and making it their way.
Old school, with no compromises. It’s pretty awesome if you think about it.
Heritage villages are so
Heritage villages are so cool, especially ones with stone ovens! I must visit, thanks for this tasty travelogue!
