Tiger Malt
I’ve been enamored with malt beverages for awhile now.
Look what I found in Kamloops the other day:
Tiger Malt ($0.98)
This is a malt drink from Barbados (but for Canada it’s produced in Ontario.) I stumbled upon it, while meandering down the ethnic aisle at the Superstore. It is dark, thick and stout-like in appearance. It looks a lot like Egils Maltextrakt, but Tiger Malt is a lot sweeter. Almost syrupy in sweetness. There is much more caramel flavour to this than Karamalz. I like the viscosity of Tiger Malt, but I think I prefer the taste of Karamalz or Maltextrakt. However, at the agreeable price of 98 cents, I'll still grab a few bottles to keep in the fridge just in case...
I can breathe easy now that I know Kamloops has a healthy supply of malt beverages around town.
Tiger Malt can be found at Superstore
Karamalz can be found at Gary's Deli.
Vita Malz can be found at Gary’s Deli or the Smörgåsbord.
Clearly I'm not yet over these malta drinks, as I still get a twinge of excitement running through my veins when I spy them.
Beer Store
Does this beer exist in Beer Store?
Herb
Tiger Malt
Does this exist anywhere online for purchase?
or when you say "Tiger Malt can be found at Superstore"
I wonder if it would be possible to walk into the local Superstore here (New Brunswick) and ask them to order it.
-Thanks for this article!!!

Re: Tiger Malt
Welcome Joe,
Although I have not been in a Superstore in New Brunswick, I'm going to go ahead and say: Yes, you can sashay into a Loblaws owned store and it is probable that you will be in Tiger Malt heaven.
Brick Brewing Company (in Ontario) has the Canadian contract to brew Tiger Malt for distribution in Canada.
Loblaws and the stores that fall under their umbrella should stock it. I found it in the Ethnic Aisle, not in the regular soda/juice aisle. Funny your comment is timely as Tiger Malt is acutually on sale for 79 cents this week at the Ontario Loblaws here's a link to the flyer. I realize this may not be helpful if you are in New Brunswick.
I think chances are good that they will carry it. If not, Loblaws/Superstore have been pretty good with bringing in products (that are already carried by their parent company) into specific store locations.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Happy malt hunting!

So to give a little
So to give a little update.
When I had first wrote my comment, I had not (and still haven't) tried Tiger Malt. I was looking for something to replace the malt drink I found here in NB, called Malt Star -
Info Here
They only had two cases when I bought them, and I didn't know they would make special orders. So after reading here I went in to ask about Tiger Malt (thought it would be easier to get than Malt Star), which they had never heard of. Instead I ended up ordering 14(!!) cases of Malt Star, which I picked up the other day, as it took about 2 weeks to get here.
Thanks for the incentive to go ask about an order!
Joe
Re: So to give a little update - Malt Star
Oh my goodness Joe,
I'm excited, because I think we are kindred spirits!
You had me at "14 cases".
I won't even put exclamation marks after 14 cases, because Joe, I UNDERSTAND. I get it man.
If I could order 14 cases of Egils Maltextrakt, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Like I was picking up a dozen eggs.
Now you have me wanting so badly to find Malt Star. It sounds dark and heady like my beloved Eglis Maltextrakt. I want to try Malt Star now, bad.
Your comment is again, timely, because I just discovered another malt drink in my neck of the woods. I'll have to get that post out ASAP.
God I love malt drinks...
Happy sipping
L.
(...leaves computer to get a Karamaltz from fridge.)
Hello again and oh boy did I find something you might like!
Hi Lvoers!
I just got to try a new malt drink I found in Sobeys, in their "international foods" section. This one is called "Laziza" imported from Lebanon. This is the best pic I can find of it, but the flavor I have is Apple. http://i.imgur.com/83YkkQU.jpg
So far, it's REALLY good. It doesn't have a the sharp malt bite, but still has the malt taste. It's very smooth and mixes well with the apple flavor. the weird part about it is that it's clear, not dark, like all the other malt drinks I've seen.
I thought of you as soon as I tried it, and had to tell you about it!
Hope all is well,
Joe
Re: Laziza Malt Beverage
Hi JoeB,
I love that you too are always on the look out for malty goodness.
Yes I am familiar with Laziza. I wrote about it in this post about the now defunct Heba Supermarket in Kamloops. (I believe the space is now a Pho restaurant...)
(Click here to re-visit the Heba/Laziza post.)
Now that Heba Supermarket is gone I haven't seen Laziza since in Kamloops.
I've only tried the regular version, so your uncovering of the fruity versions is very interesting to me. I will keep my eyes peeled for these out here in BC. Our warm weather is just beginning so it sounds like a perfect time to look for refreshing malty drinks.
Thank you for the heads up!
L.
