Japadog, it started out as just one cart on the corner of Smithe and Burrard. Japadog has four other locations now, one of which is a dine-in space on Davie Street. I still prefer the original site in front of the Sutton Place Hotel for my dog. The menu has gotten bigger over the years but it’s still relatively small.
I made reference to Japadog during my Icelandic Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur post, so I thought I should include a post about Japadog on Love of Eating for reference sake.
I’ve realized that when I eat in Kamloops, I tend to compare foods here to things that I’m familiar with. Inevitably, that’ll be things I’m use to on the coast. I’ve noticed that I often make reference to places and food items I enjoy in Vancouver or elsewhere. It makes sense to me to include some of my favourite haunts in the GVRD, otherwise I’ll refer to some things and you may, or may not know what the hells I’m talking about. Fair?
Kurobuta Terimayo ($7.25)
Japanese black hog, apparently it’s the “most highly prized pork in all of Japan!” Sorry Porky but when you’re ground up in a wiener whatever delicate and unique flavours you may have had are lost. Still very good, hotdog-wise.
Spicy Cheese Terimayo ($6.75)
It looks just like the other terimayo, doesn’t it? Well it is basically the same except this dog is packed with spices, hot peppers and cheese. The dog is a litte short for the bun, though.
The hotdogs are fairly large. Is it just me or does it seem ever since Mr. Tubesteak came on the scene decades ago, hotdog wieners became enormous? I find these big wieners don’t have that snap like the narrower and longer European dogs. Both have fried onions, teriyaki sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, and nori as toppings. I can’t say the fried onions came out to play as much as it had in previous visits. Japadog is still better than most hotdogs out there. Kinda pricey though, for a hotdog.
