Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur – Reykjavik, Iceland
*UPDATE December 2012: price of hotdog is now 320 ISK*
Hotdogs are things that I eat on the go, or when I’m at a child friendly summer barbeque. I've eaten a lot of dogs, but I don’t often crave them unless I find myself on Burrard Street near Japadog. On the plane ride to Iceland, one of the adverts on the seat-back screen said the most popular restaurant in Iceland was a hotdog stand. It didn’t’ say which one but it didn’t take much digging to find the name: Bæjarins Beztu.
The famous kiosk is located downtown and a short deek away from the main drag. In the biz since 1937, the busy stall boasted a queue of hungry patrons at all hours of the day and the wee hours of the night. This is a fantastical gem to behold. There are 2 items on the menu: hotdog (280 ISK) and Coke (170 ISK). That’s all.
The attendant quickly grabs a bun, scoops on some raw onions, fried onions, ketchup, a dog, sweet mustard, and some Icelandic remoulade. Then she places it in the indented holder on the counter. Krona for krona the pylsur is by far the best deal going on in Reykjavik.
Eina með öllu - One With Everything (280 ISK; approx $2.39 CND)
This is no village torch event cocktail wiener, but a slim full-size dog that is about 1cm longer at each end of the bun. The hotdog has a bit o' lamb in it among other things. The bun is soft and white. At first bite I get a good snap, and a crunch of the crispy onion married with the keynote sauces. It's kinda Japadog Terimayo-ish with the sweetness, but sans the seaweed.
This is the best damn hotdog I have ever ingested. So simple, yet so dramastically* good.
I even reconfirmed my first impression with another visit before I had to fly back across the pond.
*I embrace the vocabulary of Virginia Chance.
